Commercial thinking is one of the most valuable skills in estate agency. It’s also one of the least talked about in leadership development.
Most training focuses on confidence, communication, managing people. All of it important. But the commercial side, understanding how decisions connect to performance, how to read the bigger picture, how to make smarter calls, often gets left out of the conversation entirely.
It’s time to put it back in.
The gap nobody talks about
There’s a version of leadership development that covers confidence, communication, managing teams, having difficult conversations. All of it valuable. All of it necessary.
But commercial awareness tends to get left out. Or saved for later. Or quietly assumed to be something you’ll pick up as you go.
The problem is that “as you go” often means learning it the hard way. Making decisions without fully understanding the impact. Feeling uncertain in conversations about performance, strategy or profitability. Knowing the job inside out but feeling less sure of yourself the moment the conversation turns to the bigger picture.
That gap exists for women at every stage of an estate agency career. Whether you’re running your own branch, managing a team, or earlier in your career and starting to think long term, commercial confidence shapes how you lead, how you’re perceived, and how far you go.
What commercial thinking actually means in estate agency
It’s not about becoming a finance expert. It’s not about memorising formulas or spending your evenings with a P&L.
It’s about understanding how the decisions you make every day connect to the bigger picture. Pricing. Recruitment. Marketing. Team performance. The choices that feel operational but are actually commercial. The ones that add up, over time, to the difference between a business that thrives and one that struggles.
When you understand that connection, something shifts. You stop second-guessing yourself in those conversations. You stop deferring to people who sound more confident but aren’t necessarily more informed. You start making decisions with clarity, because you understand what you’re deciding and why it matters.
That’s what commercial awareness actually gives you. Not a new skill set. A new perspective.
Learning it doesn’t have to be painful
Here’s where it gets interesting.
WiEA’s September training session, The Power of a Commercially Aware Leader, starts with a fast-paced business simulation. You and your group take over a fictional pizza takeaway in the city of Villeburg. You make real time decisions on pricing, marketing, recruitment and operations. Then you watch the impact of those decisions unfold in front of you.
You will laugh. You will learn. You may briefly panic over your P&L.
And then you’ll use everything that happened in that room to understand how commercial thinking plays out in the real world of estate agency. From reading your market to managing team performance to balancing people with profit, it’s a day that makes the numbers feel relevant, accessible and, genuinely, a bit fun.
No finance background needed. No spreadsheets. Just curiosity, an open mind, and a room full of women who are figuring it out alongside you.
Who this session is for
Both dates are open to women at any stage of an estate agency career.
If you run your own branch and want to feel more confident making strategic decisions, this is for you. If you manage a team and want to understand how your choices connect to the wider business, this is for you. If you’re earlier in your career and want to start thinking more commercially before you reach a senior role, this is absolutely for you.
The women who get the most from this session aren’t the ones who already know their numbers. They’re the ones who’ve been waiting for someone to show them how it all fits together.

One more thing
Commercial confidence doesn’t just make you better at your job. It changes how you’re seen in it.
The women who understand the numbers, who can hold their own in a strategic conversation, who make decisions with clarity rather than hesitation, are the ones who get taken seriously at every level of this industry.
That’s not a small thing. And it’s absolutely within reach.
