In the world of estate agency, as women, we find ourselves navigating a unique set of challenges. One of these challenges is imposter syndrome.
In this article we explore the roots of imposter syndrome, its impact on women in the sector and practical strategies for overcoming it.
What is Imposter Syndrome?
Imposter syndrome is described as a psychological pattern where individuals doubt their accomplishments and have a persistent fear of being exposed as a “fraud”. This feeling of inadequacy and self-doubt can be particularly prevalent among high-achieving individuals.
Women experiencing imposter syndrome often attribute their successes to luck or external factors rather than their own competence, leading to anxiety and a lack of confidence.
However, it is important to acknowledge the criticism surrounding the concept of imposter syndrome. Critics argue that it places undue emphasis on the individual, implying that the problem lies within the person experiencing these feelings rather than addressing the broader systemic issues that contribute to them. For example, do you feel like an imposter because of your own self-doubt or because the workplace culture and structural inequalities within estate agency have made you feel that way?
Dealing with Imposter Syndrome
Whatever the root cause of imposter syndrome, there are a few different things you can try to overcome it. The systematic changes are challenging (but at WiEA with your help we’re working on those!), however here are a few things you can do for yourself:
Reframe Your Narrative: When self-doubt creeps in, acknowledge it, then actively challenge it. List your achievements, both big and small. Remind yourself of positive feedback you’ve received.
Embrace the Growth Mindset: View challenges as opportunities to learn and improve. Focus on continuous learning and skill development. This demonstrates your commitment to excellence and silences the inner critic.
Find a Support Network: Surround yourself with supportive women who understand your struggles and celebrate your victories. (Read our How to Build a Support Network in Estate Agency blog, for more on this!)
